How the Italian Beef Became Chicago's Most Beloved Sandwich

How the Italian Beef Became Chicago's Most Beloved Sandwich | SAN ANTONIO XYZ | Scoop.it
Made with hot, wet beef, giardiniera peppers and jus, Chicago's favorite sandwich is ready to take its show on the road thanks to Emmett's and Portillo's.
Al Cannistra's insight:

This made my day! All I have to say is BRING IT ON - Portillo’s come to San Antonio!!!!

.

Not a lot of folks here in San Antonio have had Chicago Italian Beef. As a matter of fact, neither have the Italians in Italy! (the usual reply there was “a what?”). But it is time to change that and the sooner the better IMO.

.

Portillo’s is well known in Chicagoland, long lines to get a beef sandwich were normal – and, they had a lot of competition, very good competition! I heard when they first opened locations in Florida folks waited 2 or 3 hours in line! After living in San Antonio  over 15 years, only recently did I find a local “beef joint” worthy of a write up on the blog  https://www.sanantoniorealestate.blog/2021/08/chicago-hot-dogs-and.html (they do Chicago style hot dogs too – and they do it well.

Impossible's plant-based nuggets are now available in select restaurants | SAN ANTONIO XYZ | Scoop.it
Impossible's plant-based chicken nuggets make their debut..
Al Cannistra's insight:

OK, I get the trend – but I am half Italian. Italians have been serving up fried vegetables, like zucchini since it was introduced in Pittsburgh in the 1950 era. And that dish may be a spinoff of “fritto misto” circa 1900 USA. I guess the part the Italians missed was how to change taste and texture to make it taste like chicken. In the day, they may have considered that impossible!
